⬥ Voice + Local · Security+ Researched

Voice Control.
Real Security.
Zero Subscriptions.

Run your cameras, your front door, and your whole-home alerts by voice through an Echo Show — and keep every recording on hardware you own. No monthly fee for any of it.

The verdict: Build it around the eufy HomeBase 3 hub (included with the eufyCam 3 4-cam kit). Cameras and the doorbell answer to Alexa for live view, footage stays local, and you never pay a cloud bill.

Who's Behind This Research

Why a Security+ Certified Dad Built This System

I'm a dad of two and I hold CompTIA Security+. I don't install these systems in my own home — I research them. I put this lineup together because people kept asking me a version of the same thing: how do you get the convenient stuff — "show me the front door," locks and alerts you can run without digging for your phone — without shipping your family's footage off to some company's cloud and paying every month for the privilege? This is what I landed on. A hub you own does the storing, the recordings stay in your house, and the voice part sits on top as a convenience. It's never where the footage lives.

The Architecture

Local Where It Matters, Voice On Top

Three layers do the work: the hub keeps your data at home, the devices report to it, and the Echo Show is how you reach all of it without touching a phone.

HomeBase 3 hub at the center with cameras, a smart lock, and door and motion sensors all connecting locally, and an Echo Show beside it
Layer 01 · The Hub
HomeBase 3 owns your data

The eufyCam 3 kit includes HomeBase 3 — eufy's local "Edge" hub with 16GB built in and storage expandable to 16TB, no monthly fee. Every camera and sensor reports here, and footage is processed and stored on it rather than a company server.

Layer 02 · The Devices
Cameras, door & sensors

4K solar cameras watch the perimeter, the FamiLock covers the front door with a 2K doorbell, and entry + motion sensors catch openings and movement. All paired to the one hub, all storing locally.

Layer 03 · The Voice
Echo Show is the window

Enable the eufy Security skill and ask Alexa to pull any camera or the doorbell onto the Echo Show screen — "Alexa, show me the front door" — plus routines and announcements, all hands-free.

The honest privacy line: your recordings live on the HomeBase 3 inside your house — that's the local part. Voice is different. Alexa runs through Amazon's cloud, the way every Echo does, so the spoken commands leave your home even though the footage doesn't. Use the Echo Show for the convenience; just don't count it as part of the "stays on your property" side of things.

The Subscription Tax

What You're Really Paying For "Smart"

The big ecosystems put voice, history, and alerts behind a monthly plan. Add it up over three years and the fee, not the hardware, ends up being the most expensive thing you bought.

eufy FamiLock S3 Max

One device that replaces three: a BHMA Grade 1 deadbolt with palm-vein unlock, a 2K HDR doorbell camera, and a keypad — plus a rear video screen so anyone can check the door without a phone. Palm-vein data stays on the lock. It's also why this build skips a separate doorbell: the lock is the doorbell.

Honest setup note: the FamiLock connects to HomeBase 3 (footage + access logs stay on your local hub, with eufy AI) or to Alexa/Google/Apple via Matter for voice lock control — one or the other, not both at once. We default it to HomeBase 3 to keep everything on your local system; voice-unlock is the optional Matter mode. Palm vein unlocks the door but doesn't lock it, and it fits standard doors 35–55 mm thick.

Voice In Practice

What You Can Actually Say

Set up once in the Alexa app (enable the eufy Security skill, then "discover devices"), name your cameras clearly, and the rest is hands-free.

An Echo Show on a kitchen counter displaying a front-door camera feed after a voice command
Live View
"Show me the front door"

Any named camera or the FamiLock doorbell appears on the Echo Show in seconds — check a delivery, the driveway, or a noise without lifting a phone.

Announcements
"Someone is at the door"

Doorbell presses announce through your Echo devices, so the whole house hears it — no missed visitors while you're in another room.

Routines
"Good night"

Fold the system into Alexa routines alongside your lights and thermostat so one phrase sets the everyday-task scenes that make a smart home actually feel smart.

Set expectations honestly: voice shines for viewing, announcements, and routines. It is not built to arm/disarm the alarm sensors — you'll do that from the eufy app or with geofencing, since this build intentionally skips a wall keypad. And remember the FamiLock's either/or: in HomeBase-3 mode it's local-first; switch it to Matter if you specifically want to control the lock by voice.

Why This Build

What You Get Out Of It

Hands-Free Everyday

Check the door, glance at the driveway, hear who's visiting, run a scene at bedtime — all by voice. It's the stuff you do ten times a day, minus reaching for your phone.

Footage Stays Home

Recordings live on a HomeBase 3 you own, not a company server. No cloud account is required to watch what happened yesterday.

No Monthly Fees

You pay once. History, alerts, live view, and voice all keep working with nothing recurring. There's no plan to cancel later because there was never one to sign up for.

DIY In An Afternoon

Cameras and sensors mount without a technician; the lock swaps a standard deadbolt. If you can hang a shelf and change a deadbolt, you can install this.

Grows With You

Start with the hub kit, then add sensors, a lock, or more cameras to the same HomeBase whenever you're ready — no re-buying the brain.

Two Assistants

Works with both Alexa and Google Assistant, so it fits the voice ecosystem you already use rather than forcing a new one.

Straight Talk

Real-World Limitations

The honest tradeoffs, so there are no surprises after checkout.

The lock is local OR voice — not both

The FamiLock pairs to HomeBase 3 for local storage and AI, or joins Alexa/Google/Apple by Matter for voice control — currently not both at the same time. Pick the mode that matters more to you.

No physical alarm keypad

This build intentionally has no wall keypad — the door lock's keypad unlocks the door, it doesn't arm the sensor alarm. You'll arm/disarm via the eufy app or geofencing. Want a wall arm/disarm point? Add a eufy Keypad.

Voice runs through the cloud

Your footage is local, but Alexa and Google are cloud services by design, so voice commands route through them. The voice side isn't part of the "stays on your property" claim — only the storage is.

No Apple HomeKit on the hub

HomeBase 3 doesn't support Apple HomeKit. The FamiLock can reach Apple Home via Matter (in its Matter mode), but the cameras and hub are an Alexa/Google story, not a Siri one.

A Note From a Security Professional

Why "Voice Convenience" Shouldn't Cost You Your Data

I've held CompTIA Security+ since 2025, and a good chunk of that training is about how home data actually gets out — breaches, an employee who shouldn't have looked, a subpoena that pulls cloud-stored footage. Most "smart" security ties the convenient part to the exposed part: you want voice and saved history, so you hand it all to a vendor's cloud and pay every month to keep it there. Building around HomeBase 3 breaks that link. The recordings sit on hardware in your house, and the voice piece rides on top — use it or don't. You still get the hands-free part; you just aren't trading away your front-door video to get it.
