Video Doorbells That Store Locally — No Monthly Fees, Ever
Ring charges you a fee just to watch footage you already paid to record. These two don't. Local storage, no cloud dependency, no recurring costs — evaluated by a Security+ certified researcher.
Why Ring and Nest Aren't on This Page
They're the two best-selling doorbell brands on Amazon. They're also subscription-dependent by design — and that's a dealbreaker for this site.
Ring and Google Nest dominate Amazon's best seller charts. What the listing price doesn't show is the subscription required to actually use them as advertised. Without a paid plan, Ring gives you live view only — no recorded video, no motion history, no playback. Google Nest gives you three hours of event history free, then requires Nest Aware at $6–$8 per month for anything useful.
This isn't a minor inconvenience. It's a business model where the hardware is the hook and the subscription is the product.
On top of hardware cost
On top of hardware cost
Hardware cost is your only cost
Ring and Nest are competent products. They're just not built for people who don't want to rent access to their own footage. Every camera on this page stores locally with no mandatory subscription.
Both store locally. Neither charges a monthly fee.
The Eufy E340 leads on AI detection and dual-camera coverage. The Reolink leads on resolution and flexible storage. Both fit the no-subscription standard this site is built on.

The E340 works standalone with 8GB of built-in storage — no HomeBase required. If you already own the Eufy 5-Piece Home Alarm Kit (which includes HomeBase 2), the E340 is fully compatible with it. Adding HomeBase 3 later expands storage up to 16TB and unlocks BionicMind AI features. You are not locked into a hub purchase to get started.
Per manufacturer specifications, the E340 is compatible with both HomeBase 2 (S280) and HomeBase 3 (S380). Note: Apple HomeKit is not currently supported on the E340.
The Reolink Video Doorbell (Battery) does not include a chime in the box. To hear alerts inside your home you'll need to either purchase the Reolink Chime separately, use an Alexa Echo device, connect a Google Assistant speaker, or pair it with a Reolink Home Hub. If you want a complete out-of-the-box chime solution without buying an extra accessory, the Eufy E340 is compatible with your existing mechanical doorbell chime or an Alexa device you may already own.
Battery life is rated at approximately 5 months per full charge based on Reolink's lab testing at 20 event recordings of 8 seconds per day. Real-world battery life will vary based on motion frequency, temperature, and settings.
The Eufy 2022 Privacy Incident
In late 2022, security researchers documented that certain Eufy camera users could briefly view other users' camera feeds through Eufy's cloud infrastructure — without logging into those accounts. The incident affected the cloud-viewing pathway, not local on-device storage.
Anker / Eufy acknowledged the issue, cited a server-side configuration error affecting a subset of users during a transition period, and updated its infrastructure.
What this means for the E340: The E340 supports on-device local storage with no cloud subscription required. Footage stored locally does not route through Eufy's cloud layer. The app still communicates with Eufy servers for remote access, firmware updates, and push notifications — any network-connected device carries inherent trust considerations. This disclosure is included because this site does not omit material facts.
Which Doorbell Is Right for You?
- → You want dual-camera coverage — faces at eye level and packages at ground level simultaneously
- → Face recognition matters — the E340 can learn familiar faces and alert accordingly
- → You already own the Eufy 5-Piece Alarm Kit and want everything in one app
- → You don't have existing doorbell wiring and need a battery-powered option
- → You want the option to expand local storage significantly via HomeBase later
- → You have no existing doorbell wiring and want a completely wire-free install — ideal for renters
- → You want vehicle detection in addition to person and package alerts
- → Your router uses a combined SSID — dual-band WiFi is more forgiving than the E340's 2.4GHz-only connection
- → Simpler local storage setup matters — microSD card only, no hub needed to get started
- → You already use Reolink cameras and want a single-app ecosystem
- → You weigh the Eufy 2022 privacy incident more heavily in your decision
Build a Full No-Subscription Stack
A doorbell covers your entry point. These pages cover the rest of your property — all local storage, all zero monthly fees.
Peel-and-stick perimeter sensors, motion detector, keypad, and HomeBase 2 — all in one box. The E340 doorbell is compatible with HomeBase 2, meaning your doorbell and alarm system live in one app with no subscription on either.
View the 5-Piece Alarm Kit →The Reolink E1 Pro and E1 Zoom use the same Reolink app as the Battery Doorbell — one login covers your full front door and indoor setup. Local microSD storage, no subscription on either camera.

Eufy (Video Doorbell E340) is a brand of Anker Innovations Technology Co., Ltd., headquartered in Shenzhen, China. Neither Eufy nor Reolink is on the NDAA-banned list at time of writing.
Reolink (Video Doorbell WiFi) is manufactured by Reolink Digital Technology Co., Ltd., also headquartered in Shenzhen, China.
Both cameras are recommended here because they support local storage with no cloud subscription required. As with any network-connected device, both cameras communicate with manufacturer servers for remote access, app functionality, and firmware updates. Buyers who require fully air-gapped storage should investigate firmware network-call behavior independently before purchase.
